Elafonisi beach in Crete is a breath-taking site in the south of Chania, 5 km from the monastery of Chrysoskalitisa and about 70km from Chania city. It is an isolated area ideal for swimming, and the islet near the coast gives the impression of being in a lagoon. This marvellous piece of heaven is well worth a visit while you are staying at our hotel in Rethymno.

Elafonisi Crete Greece
Elafonisi Island is a peninsula located close to the southwestern corner of the mediterranean island of Crete. The beach is one of the most well known beaches of Crete mainly thanks to its clear, transparent water and white and unique pink sand. When the weather is fine and the wind is not blowing, it is possible to walk to the island through the shallow water. The island is a protected nature reserve. In this island, you can discover small deserted beaches and find a beach just for you.

Elafonisi beach itself looks out over the Libyan sea and is incredibly nice all year round. You’ll easily find a place where you can lie on, swim and relax in comfortable chairs with umbrellas. The high season is not a problem as the beach is incredibly wide. Make sure you walk along the sandbar to visit the islet and explore the many tracks, coves and solitary beaches.

The endangered turtles Careta careta and several rare animals nest on the island and it is strictly forbidden to remove any plants, animals and sand from the area. Elafonisi is a Natura 2000 protected area.

We at the Rimondi Grand Hotel & Spa Resort Crete certainly hope you’ll enjoy this unique and fantastic beach! It certainly is one of our favourite beaches of Crete.
